That's why I came to London," he told the audience at the Royal Albert Hall. He introduced "Ladeira da Preguica" saying: "This a a song I wrote in London while I was missing my homeland." SAO PAULO, May 9 (Reuters) - Renowned Brazilian rock singer and songwriter Rita Lee, an icon of the Tropicalia artistic movement, died on Tuesday after a two-year battle with lung cancer, her family said. Carminatti led as chief geologist the discovery in 2006 of one of the world's largest offsfhore oil deposits this century, the pre-salt. The salt barrier alone was more profound than any well that Petrobras, the world's leader in deep-water exploration, had drilled before. The pre-salt area is now responsible for more than 70% of Brazil's daily production of near 4 million barrels of oil and gas. Past CEOs have failed to convince him to take a post as head of a division in the company. Petrobras experts have compared the oil deposits in the region those of nearby Guyana.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Singer Gal Costa, an icon in the Tropicalia and Brazilian popular music movements who enjoyed a nearly six-decade career, died on Wednesday. Her death was confirmed by a press representative, who provided no further information. Their joint side project became an important counterculture reference during Brazil’s two-decade military dictatorship, inspiring a record, tour and documentary. In 2011, Costa was awarded a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She remained an active performer until nearly the end, having recently suspended shows to undergo a surgery on one of her nostrils.
RIO VERDE, Brazil—Toiling on the dusty plains of central Brazil, Edilamar Caetano and her husband had long been loyal supporters of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva , the leftist front-runner in next month’s presidential elections whose own family worked the land as farmhands. In April, President Jair Bolsonaro , the former army captain who took office four years ago promising fiscal restraint and a smaller state, came to town. He gave Ms. Caetano and her husband, Wagner Vieira, a title to 84 acres they had been farming as squatters, delivering the paperwork personally with an awkward hug in a local ceremony.
